Description: Model 1865 Spencer Repeating carbine, aka the Contract Model 1865 Spencer. Designed identical to the Civil War Model 1860 repeating carbine,.. The Model 1865 Spencer repeating 7-shot carbine used a #56-52 rimfire cartridge used in the Civil War M1860 carbine. In very good condition, the M1865 carbine has a 20" long barrel fitted to its two piece walnut stock / fore-end. Barrel has a modified, raised brass blade front sight and its original the rear sight with its sliding "V" notch elevation bar. No original case colors or bluing remain but the left side metal frame exhibits highlights of aged case hardening that appears as semi-bright silver highlights. A smooth, pleasing, dark plum colored patina rests on the barrel. The bore exhibits six groove rifling that has scattered light pitting along with a surface of light grime. Would clean to semi-bright or better. Original fore-end is tight and strong with just normal marks from use.. Walnut stock shows normal dings, scratches and light indentations resulting from wear and use. Stock also features fine original government cartouche stamped on the reverse side (left) just behind the sling bar. . Top flat of the receiver, forward of the hammer, is stamped with "SPENCER REPEATING / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860 in three lines with the stampings showing the double stamp that shows up on the wartime production. . Serial # (27201) is located at the rear of the frame near the hammer. Original carbine sling bar and sling ring are tightly attached to the left side of stock. Lock screws are original and slightly buggered. Right side of the metal frame shows light to moderate patches of rust but other metal surfaces of the carbine appear dark and exhibit just scattered pinprick rusting. Iron butt plate and magazine are strong and tight and both wear a mottled dark gray coloring. Cartridge tube is original and in fine condition with a brass turned head backed by the tube's heavy push spring. Carbine exhibits crisp, strong mechanics and retains its iron swivel ring under the stock. Model 1865 Spencer carbine is a fine representative weapon used by the Federal cavalry during and after the Civil War. A beautiful addition that will highlight any military equestrian display or weapons collection. I have tried to discribe the gun the best that I can, given that I am not an expert on this rifle I may have missed somthing or left something out. you should call and feel free to discuss this item with me to verify the claims in this ad.
