The then top secret, modified US Model 1903 Mk I, using the Pedersen Device to fire semi-automatic, did not make it into WWI in time to see combat. So, it was secreted away, still under wraps as "Top Secret". The adoption of the M1 Rifle made the 1903 Mk I obsolete and so the military tried to destroy all semi-auto Pedersen Devices and return the rifle to the US Military units, to be used as were all other issued US Model of 1903 Springfield Rifles, having the standard bolt and operating as do all bolt action rifles.. Many GIs who carried the rifle, must have puzzled over the "funny slot" cut into the left side of the receiver to allow ejected Pedersen Device cartridge cases to be expelled from the rifle. Only much later, did the story of the failed system that never was, come to light. This rifle was pulled out of storage and re issued as a standard US Model Springfield 1903 to take part in WWII. The WWI, Finger Groove stock is still on the rifle. On the receiver, one can read, "Model 1903", over, "MARK I". The bore appears as new, having a #1 gauge reading at the muzzle.
