This is a military surplus SPSh-44 Flare Pistol, in mint condition, which was never deployed by troops. It is of robust construction, and works perfectly -- It locks up tightly, has a shiny clean barrel, and has no corrosion.
A Bit of History: The SPSh (Signalny Pistolet Shpagina) "SPSh Flare Pistol" is a classic Russian-designed flare pistol, which was designed by Georgy Semyonovich Shpagin (best known for his PPSh-41 submachine gun). It entered service in 1943 as the SPSh-43, and was further refined into it's present form in 1944, as the SPSh-44 (also known as SPSh-2). It is renowned to be an excellent addition for both the collector and survivalist.
The SPSh-44 was produced for the military in dozens of European countries from the '40's until the mid-80's, with the quality of construction and materials varying tremendously over the decades.
This SPSh flare pistol is of exceptional quality, and is one of several pristine specimens that I have owned for many years.. The tight 'gun quality lockup,' heavy hot-blued steel construction, and precise 'bead-less' welds (note the seamless barrel/receiver interface), attest to a level of quality construction , which is very rarely found in the vast majority of 'utility quality ' flare guns [or even modern firearms], that can be found on the market.
It's Serial Number is prominently imprinted into both it's barrel and breach The date of manufacture and factory logo are stamped into the barrel. And, this flare pistol has been 'proof fired' at the factory, as evidenced by the multiple imprinted proof mark symbols on the receiver, attesting to an exceptional level of quality control and an attention to detail, which is typically only associated with quality European firearms.
The external cocking hammer and well designed safety mechanism, provides for a reliable, practical, and easy to use design. This flare pistol cannot be accidentally fired or opened, when the safety is engaged.
Quality SPSh's like this are worth their weight in gold to outdoorsmen/survivalists/preppers, for they are rugged, versatile, and up to the task of being deployed under a variety of scenarios. They are working heirlooms. With minimal maintenance, they will last several lifetimes. Also, flare guns are unregulated within most States and municipalities.
