Part of a slew of military rifles produced by Mauser for numerous countries around 1900, the Swedish 1896 infantry rifle stands out because of its unique calibration and action. Chambered in 6.5x55 mm instead of more typical 8mm Mauser, the rifle also cocks on closing. Renowned for their accuracy, these rifles turned in some of the highest scores on record in international service rifle competitions among armies during the early part of the 20th century. The 6.5 x 55 Swede is still very popular in Europe because of its low recoil and performance—long and heavy for its diameter with a high ballistic coefficient like the modern 6.5 CM, which was patterned after it. Prized for elegant design, accuracy, and smooth action, Mauser military rifles have an exceptionally strong following among collectors. The Swedish 1896 is one of the best. Don't miss!

Mauser bolt rifles are famous for their accuracy and smooth action. The action is pure turn-of-the century Mauser with a large claw extractor and fixed ejector for controlled-round feed and ejection. The receiver and barrel are blued, but the bolt and butt plate are white. The brass inspection disk shows that at the last arsenal check up the barrel shot to point of aim, bore land/groove diameters were tightly within spec, and the bore had a “2” rating (acceptable rifling but some wear, dark and/or rust patches). Controls are simple and robust, consisting of the bolt, rear 3-position safety (Fire, Lock Trigger, Lock Action), and a large bolt release lever on the left. The action is set in a dark, straight-grip stock. The serial number, “20xxx”, is stamped on the receiver's right, which on top bears Mauser's mark, “Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf A/N 1899”. The floor plate, butt plate, and bolt body s/n's match the receiver, but numbers on other parts vary, typical of surplus guns. The rear "ladder" sight is intact, functional, and adjustable for elevation to an optimistic 2000 meters. The front sight is a stout blade, adjustable for windage in its dovetail. This is a good deal on a classic collectible rifle! Don't pass it up!

Traded in to reduce a collection, this gun is in NRA (Antique) Very Good condition although in need of a deep cleaning to remove old cosmoline from the nooks and crannies, particularly in the action. Based on the amount of arsenal grease left in and around the bolt, this rifle does not appear to have been used much since unpacking. Original blue on the receiver is about 90% with wear mostly on edges along with a few scattered light rust freckles. Finish on the mag floor plate and trigger guard is about 80% interrupted by more rust freckles. The bolt, it's locking surfaces and raceways are in Excellent condition although still coated by old lube in and around the angles. Functionally, the action is smooth and lock up is tight. Barrel finish is about 50% with a wispy brown patina and some rough patches of light surface rust. Chamber walls are smooth and lightly stained. Although the rifling is well defined, the bore is dark and rough. The heavily oiled stock wood is dark and shows the dings, bruises, and tool marks expected on a surplus military arm of this age. Although it has “character”, the wood shows no splits or cracks. Finish on the barrel bands and sling fittings is variable, from about 20-80%, with caked on old lubricant in the crevices and some rust blooms. Numerous surface rust blooms mottle the butt plate, and the cleaning rod. The rear sight is stiff but functional with a few finish blemishes. This 1896 Swede is a must have in any Mauser collection!
