Description: Fox, Year 1913, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 5oz, SN#300105

Ansley H. Fox came out with the best proportioned 16ga. gun made in America late in 1912 with their new 16 and 20 gauge guns, both made on a 20 gauge frame. The first full year of production was 1913 and the serial number range began at 300,000. The early A Grade engraving pattern was a simple scroll pattern in English style. The first few hundred small bore Fox guns were adorned with early A style engraving, and then came William Gough in 1913 who changed it all. A Grades from then on had the more familiar deep vine and foliate type engraving. Many Fox enthusiasts consider the early A engraving more precise and graceful. This gun, sn300105 made in 1913, the 105th graded 16ga. Fox made, is one of a small handful of 16ga. A Grade Fox guns you will ever see with early A engraving. Michael McIntosh noted quite clearly in his seminal book, “A.H. FOX, THE FINEST GUN IN THE WORLD”, that the early guns seemed to be made with a little more care than the later guns, with well-polished internal parts, nicer wood, and a better fit and finish than the later guns. You will notice these qualities in this gun, weighing just 6lbs. 5oz., balanced perfectly between your hands with its 30" Krupp Steel number 3 weight barrels, nicely figured English walnut, and excellent checkering. This 107 year-old-gun has been well maintained and retains 97% factory blue on its barrels, 65% factory bone and charcoal case color on its action, and factory original wood that has been nicely restored with a hand-rubbed Truoil finish, expertly recut checkering, and wood-to-metal fit that is superb. The stock dimensions are very shootable as well. The barrels are tight on the hinge pin, the ribs are tight, the bores are excellent, and the top lever is well right of center. The mechanics are excellent with crisp triggers and excellent screws. This fine Fox is ready for another 100 years of use. The chambers have been let out to 2 ¾” and the forcing cones have been extended to 1 ½” tapers for better patterns and softer felt recoil, (a $360 service) a notable improvement over the short chambers that came with the gun. If you want the chokes altered to suit your shooting needs, we can do that here with our gunsmiths within a few days of purchase. FINDING A FOX 16GA. GRADED GUN WITH 30” BARRELS IS A VERY RARE OCCURRENCE. THIS GUN HAS TONS OF ORIGINAL CONDITION AND MATCHES THE ORDER CARD AND REMAINS “AS SHIPPED” with the exception of the pad to extend the LOP and the altered chambers.
