Description: From security service in the Caribbean comes this attractive Smith & Wesson .38 Chief’s Special Airweight, numbered model 37, without any engineering change suffix. From its J178000 range serial number, it was manufactured in 1973. Manufacturer was Smith & Wesson of Springfield, MA, under Bangor Punta Corporate Ownership. Type is traditional double and single action lightweight pocket revolver. Construction is steel barrel, hammer, trigger, cylinder, and internal parts built into an alloy frame with period correct Sile Italian Walnut Combat Grips. Frame is J sized, with square butt grip frame. Chambering is .38 Smith & Wesson Special caliber, not designed for any +P loads. Barrel is 2 inch standard tapered, pinned into the frame. Sights are barrel integral serrated blade front with frame integral fixed notch rear. Cylinder capacity is 5 rounds. Trigger is .240 serrated face, with matching serrated spur hammer. Safety system is internal transfer bar. Dimensions are 1.31 inches cylinder thickness; 6 1/2 inches overall length; 4 1/4 inches height; weight 16 ounces empty with center of gravity at the trigger. Trigger pulls at 11 pounds vicinity double action, with 1 or 2 degrees hammer travel after the cylinder times. On single action, the hammer travels 15 degrees after the cylinder times, and single action trigger pull is a crisp original 3 1/2 pounds. Lateral cylinder play is negligible. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap measures .008.Carbon deposits under the top strap and on the cylinder face are minimal. We estimate this revolver was actually fired fewer than 100 times. Finish is polished surface blued steel, with matte front sight area, gloss black anodized frame, and color casehardened trigger and hammer. Right side plate and one cylinder chamber have agency marking; otherwise, surface detractions are minimal, principally finish freckles on the bluing, edge wear, and wear on the grips. We rate this 2 inch Chief as Very Good, close to Excellent, 80 to 85 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves.
