Description: Rare Civil War Merrill Carbines. 54 caliber percussion breechloaders. total quantity made 14,495. Merrills were issued to the following Union calvary regiments N.Y.1st,5th,18th; Penn.11th,17th,18th;N.J.1st;Indiana,7th:Wisc.1st,3rd,:KY 27th,;Del.1st. First Type; marked on lockplate forward of hammer: J.H.MERRILL BALTO./PAT.JULY 1858 /APL.9 MAY 21-28-61,and (rear of hammer)the serial number. Stock fitted with brass pathcbox,and the forend tip has sharply tapered contour. Breech lever is secured by latch of flat knurled type. Second Type: lockplate marked as above with addition of an American eagle design in center. Behind hammer the serial replaced by the year of manufacture, made without patchbox. The forend tip has a rounder thicker shape. Breech lever is secured by a rounded button type latch. I consider both to be in very good condition for their age. The bores are clean and show rifling. The stocks are in nice shape just the usual handling marks.No major cracks or repairs. Metal has turned a dark plum patina. Serial numbers and most of the stampings are legible. Both locks function on half and full cock. These rarely seen models are reasonably priced and are up for sale together.
