Description: Rare RSAF Enfield-built Mk. VI Webley-Pattern Revolver: For sale is a rare Webley-Pattern Mark VI Top-Break Revolver built in 1926 by Britain’s RSAF (Royal Small Arms Factory) Enfield. The Webley Revolver (also known/referred to as the Webley Break-Top Revolver or Webley Self-Extracting Revolver) was, in various marks, the standard issue service pistol for the armed forces of the United Kingdom, the British Empire, and the Commonwealth from 1887 until 1963. Research indicates this pistol, marked “Enfield Mk VI, 1926” is one of few Webley-pattern revolvers built by RSAF Enfield between 1923 and 1926. This pistol is a rare, relatively short-run, high-quality, highly collectable variant of the British military and police sidearm whose rugged design and powerful .455 Webley cartridge was used during Britian’s Boer War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, and numerous British colonial conflicts, as well as seeing domestic law enforcement duty with many colonial police forces in Hong Kong, Singapore, and London Metropolitan Police. Compared to the Webley-made Mk. VI revolvers, the Enfield Mk. VI exhibits construction of higher quality, to include tighter tolerances, and finer machining and finishing. This particular pistol came from a private collection in Minnesota and was purchased in 1959 from Weapons Inc. in Culver City, California. The pistol’s serial numbers, A6XXX, which are on the pistol’s frame, barrel, and cylinder, are intact and matching. This rare pistol was customized so that the "horn" on the backstrap was milled off, making the grip backstrap to have a more graceful curve. The original grips were also modified and hand-checkered to match the new grip curve, and the backstrap, where modified, is left in bare metal. The pistol exhibits dark grey parkerized-type finish which is worn to bare metal in small areas on high spots in the barrel, frame, and cylinder. This pistol may have been arsenal refinished sometime prior to 1959. The revolver’s timing and springs appear strong, and while not test-fired, the pistol’s action is tight and solid, and appears to function in both single and double-action mode. The lockup is tight and all firing, cylinder, and ejection functions appear to work flawlessly. This pistol was converted from the original .455 Webley chambering to the more common .45 ACP (with moon clips) or .45 Auto Rim by shaving the rear of the cylinder, a common U.S. conversion that does not appreciably effect value and dramatically improves ammunition availability, sometime prior to 1959. In typical British fashion, the pistol shows numerous British military proof marks, to include the broad arrow. While built after WWI, this pistol is likely to have seen battlefield action in WWII, or less likely, Korea, and would make an outstanding gift for veteran or collector of WWII-era military firearms.
