The right side plate is marked with the Springfield Eagle and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD”. The left side of the barrel is marked with a “V”, “P”, an Eagle head proof, and a second “P”. The top rear of the receiver is marked with the serial number, “173633*”. The top of the butt plate in front of the mounting screw is marked “U S”. Barrel Length is 32 1/2?. The front sight is a blade pinned to a rectangular base set on the barrel. The rear sight is a fully functional adjustable flip up ladder sight. The stock is a one-piece wood with a smooth straight grip. The for-end is held with two steel barrel bands, each marked “U”, The capped for-end is grooved for the included cleaning rod. There is a sling swivel at the front of the trigger guard and a sling swivel and stacking swivel on the bottom of the front barrel band. There are light nicks, dings, dark compressions throughout, all of which have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The plate has gone to a dark patina and there is light-to-moderate scuff wear throughout. The bore is mostly dark but the rifling is well-defined. There are intermittent spots of light erosion along with light fouling throughout. The action functions correctly. The hammer has quarter and half-cock safety positions. I have fired this rifle many years ago after it was inspected. Worked like a champ. A real thrill to fire. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards. This rifle includes a socket bayonet. Stamped “US” The scabbard is polished metal with a white leather belt loop. The metal has “McKenny’s Pat. Jan.12, 1886” stamped into the top. It has been with this rifle for many years and have no idea of how they ended up together. More photos upon request. Prefer local pick up but will ship.
