Only 12,501 of these rifles were made on contract by Remington. These were also known as the “Harper’s Ferry Pattern” in official government parlance during the war. These were shorter rifles with thicker barrels than the mass-issued Springfield Models 1861 and 1863, of which millions were issued by the end of the American Civil War. This example remains in very good as found condition. 33” barrel remains good with some of the original bluing intact with scattered oxidation wear. The original fixed front sight and rear flip sights intact. Barrel has bayonet lug on right side. Bore is good; Generally clean with some rifling. Barrel is marked “Steel R.K.A.” on left side of breach and has the “VP” marks as well. Barrel also marked “1863”. Original ramrod included with one screw on tip in the rear patchbox. Two brass barrel bands and nosecap show varying patina. Lockplate shows strong markings which read “Remington’s US Ilion, N.Y.” and “1863”. Lock shows brown patina; Hammer cocks and functions flawlessly. Original stock is very good without and breaks or cracks. Stock has both cartouches intact and readable. Stock shows plenty of field use; Dings and dents. Original brass buttplate shows some patina, oxidation wear and would clean very nicelely. THIS RIFLE IS BEING SOLD AS FOUND. I WIPED IT DOWN WITH SOME OIL AS IT WAS DUSTY BUT I HAVE NOT CLEANED IT AT ALL. THIS IS A TRUE BARN FIND!
