The original Bearcat was a pet project of Mr. William B. Ruger himself, named after one of his favorite German vehicles. The original issue Bearcats bottomed out pricewise in the 1960s at only $39.50 each retail, and finally went out of production altogether in 1970. The blue variant resurfaced in 1994 with the hearty endorsement of that great German-American. For those who've never held one, the Bearcat is thoroughly traditional in design, a scaled down half-size variant, one might say, of the Single Action Army Colt type revolvers. A lady Colt, one might say. Action is Single Action Only with transfer bar safety device, 4 inch barrel, standard 6 round cylinder capacity, floating firing pin, fixed notch rear sight and rounded blade front sight; matte alloy ejector rod housing and the rest blue steel construction. Grips are Ruger factory laminate. Weight empty is only 24 ounces; extreme overall length 9 3/4 inches and maximum height 4 1/2 inches. Not only is this a consummately balanced target revolver which will outshoot its larger siblings due to the Single Six's oversize bore that accommodates the Magnum Caliber where the Bearcat will not; but also this is a much more formidable defensive revolver than people commonly think. It has the strength and toughness common to any Ruger product, and will reliably ignite hard CCI and Remington primers. With the Aguila Super Calibri rounds or CCI Stingers, this revolver can produce muzzle velocities in the 1500 feet per second range.
