The Hi Standard HB, a rare bird in the .22LR semi auto field when most manufacturers were producing hammerless semi autos. HI-STANDARD bucked the trend and brought to market their Model HB; the “H” stands for hammer. Hammer guns have some advantages over internal mechanisms in that it is easy to see what condition the gun is in and makes for a great training gun. The HB 2nd Model was produced between 1948 and 1954 with an estimated 22,000 made. This example dates to 1948 and is serial numbered 299949, the left side of the slide is marked “HI-STANDARD MODEL HB”. The left side of the frame is marked “MADE IN U.S.A. THE HIGH STANDARD MFG, CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN, PATENT PENDING .22 CAL. LONG RIFLE”. The pistol has a 6 3/4inch barrel exhibiting sharp rifling and mirror bore, the action is smooth with the trigger breaking crisply at 2.4lb. Externally the gun is in excellent condition with a few areas showing wear, notably a very small area on the rear strap. The hard rubber grip panels are in perfect shape with no damage and a clear HS logo. The gun has its factory original two-tone 10- shot magazine. HI-STANDARD set the standard for high quality yet affordable pistols and this gun is no exception, a wonderful addition to any high-quality collection and an ideal gun to take to the range for a day of plinking.
