From its Lightning Bolt S character tang marking and from its total of 10 dots, this W.R. Case & Sons Elephant Toe Nail Equal End Jack was manufactured in President Reagan’s Election Year, 1980. Obverse main modified spear pattern blade surface is stamped Bradford Bonanza to celebrate the town of Bradford, Pennsylvania’s Centennial in 1979 and 1980. Bradford began, of course, as an Oil Boom Town at that time, but most of us know that fair town from its best known citizen, Mr. William Russell Case, and the company he founded as a Knifemaker. Blade construction and finish is Chrome Vanadium Steel, not stainless. Overall length closed is 4 3/8 inches, and the main blade measures 3 1/4 inches from heel to point. The striking feature about this knife, however, is its width, a full 1 1/2 inches from the blade crest to the backspring center in closed position. Liners are solid brass, and the Pakkawood handle panels are original configuration from the time this knife was introduced.Each panel is secured by no fewer than five nickel steel rivets. Surface detractions to this particular specimen are minimal, with faint amounts of toning spots and pecks on the backspring and on the blade surfaces. It has never, however, been used or sharpened. We rate it as Excellent, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves.
