Here is Smith & Wesson’s Centennial Airweight .38 Special Revolver, numbered model 642, Second Engineering change. Each 642-2 will ship with buyer’s choice of 3 different grips. Manufacturer and warrantor is Smith & Wesson of Springfield, MA. Construction is steel barrel, cylinder, and internal parts in a lightweight alloy frame. Type is double action only revolver, with completely enclosed internal hammer that operates against a floating firing pin. Like all S&W Revolvers for the past century, it has a transfer bar internal safety device to guard against accidental discharge if the revolver is dropped. This -2 variant also carries Smith & Wesson’s internal lock with two keys. Cylinder capacity is 5 rounds of .38 Smith & Wesson Special caliber ammunition, including .38 Special +P loads. Barrel is 1 7/8 inch, nominally 2 inch, with black serrated blade front sight against a frame integral fixed notch rear sight. Trigger is .312 smooth faced MIM combat type, with 12 pound vicinity pull. Finish is matte stainless with closely matching coated alloy frame. Weight empty is 15 ounces, with center of gravity at the trigger, 17 ounce vicinity loaded. Maximum overall length is 6 1/4 inches from the muzzle to the grip frame curve; 4 1/4 inches high, and with a lateral thickness of only 1.3 inches, comparable to the slide thickness on many semi automatics that are more complicated and less reliable. More than any other firearm, a double action revolver will only fire when its operator intends for it to. Each 642-2 comes in its blue factory case with protective papers and padding, cable lock, two keys for its internal lock, owner’s manual, NRA enrollment card, fired brass envelope, and factory registration form.
