Original issue M1A1 Paratrooper Carbine with post-war modifications. This weapon is from the first run of M1 carbines modified by General Motors for airborne personnel, as indicated by the serial number (524926) and barrel date (7-43). The post-WWII mod’s include: front band with bayonet lug, ramp-type rear sight, groove for automatic fire selector switch (please note that this weapon was never modified to fire full-auto, only the stock was modified to accommodate a switch), and later pattern trigger guard with rotating safety. Markings are “INLAND DIV 524926” on receiver, “INLAND MFG. DIV. GENERAL MOTORS 7-43” on the barrel, and “AAL” stamped in the stock. The stock has the appropriate cartouches and arsenal marks. Unfortunately, someone appears to have scratched their initials “A M” on the right side on the stock, below the rear sight; though it’s scarcely noticeable (see photo).
The overall condition is very good, with a very nice bore; however, the leather cheek piece is quite worn, and does reflect its more that a half century of age and use.
This weapon has been examined by numerous collectors and dealers, and I have absolutely no doubts regarding its authenticity and correctness!
