For many years, a good rule of thumb in the firearms retail industry is never to buy any specimen from the first run of any product; they don’t have the bugs out of them. Almost always, for the past 40 years, Taurus has cautiously joined the game a bit late, but when they do, there are always improvements over existing competitor products. That is true with this Taurus, but it was part of the first run and had to go back to Miami for de-bugging, a new extractor and spring. Photo shows one of the first 738 TCP pistols we received, and its lines and design surpass Ruger and Kel-Tec substantially. Maximum thickness, for one thing, is an ultra-thin .782, very efficient for a .378 cartridge case like the .380 round. Gross height from the top of the raised notch rear sight to the bottom of the in-battery magazine butt plate is only 4 1/4 inches; and extreme overall length only 5 inches. Weight is negligible, only 10.2 ounces. Slide is high strength light weight stainless; 3 1/3 inch stainless barrel is configured like the Third Generation Metal Frame Smith & Wessons, known to produce excellent accuracy. Internal parts and hammer are blue steel. The trigger, interestingly, is high impact polymer. Capacity is 6+1 rounds of .380 ACP. This specimen spent a brief tenure in the capable hands of a nice little school teacher from McNairy County, but it experienced occasional jams, and then we sent it back after she traded for a Ruger.
