Since the prefix to this Ithaca 37's 9 digit serial number is 37172, it was manufactured in 1973. A person, then, can fire it with his left hand since it lacks a disconnector. Its nicely figured press-checkered Walnut Stock and forend have near full strength original glossy finish, but there are streaks, scouras and indentations, none of which completely penetrate the finish, that limit the wood to a strong Very Good condition. Metal of the shotgun proper has faint to moderate whitening on the receiver edges and underside. Slide bar has only moderate operation whitening, as the photos show. The Vent Rib barrel is 1980s Hastings 26 inch tubed, with a modified .692 Hastings Tube. The barrel and tube are excellent throughout, including the bore and chamber. Mechanism on this fine little Ithaca is Excellent. We are unclear whether the action is capable of cycling three inch shells, since the barrel is 3 inch chambered. We certainly do not recommend lead Magnums because of the potential for damage to the buttstock behind the receiver. This is a fine local shotgun. It has not been abused or pushed pressurewise and it was not intended to be. It has taken its share of game, even swamp rabbits and fox squirrel with high powered shells, and that is all it was intended for. It is a distinctive, very attractive field shotgun.
