Description: Dickson Round Action MATCHED PAIR 16 BORE, CASED, ONE OF A KIND!!!

The word “RARE” is too often used to describe guns that may be scarce. What is “RARE”? How about this FACTORY DOCUMENTED, matched pair of 16 bore round action John Dickson & Son? With only 22 Dickson Round Actions made in 16 bore, and 2 of the 22 contained in this maker’s oak and leather case, they are certainly as rare as one can get. Or are they? How about the only known matched pair of Dicksons recorded in the first 1000 serial numbers on record? As there were only 1800 or so Dickson Round Actions made in all gauges and calibers, the only known matched pair of 16 bores is definitely RARE!!! Wonderfully restored by Graham MacKinlay in Scotland (previously a Dickson employee), both guns are in remarkable condition and are still configured as they left the factory in 1891. The factory ledgers show the guns ordered and shipped to A.D. Miller, an officer in the famous Royal Scots Greys, a cavalry regiment of the British army. The case is so marked on the cover. What history!

The 29” fine damascus barrels of gun #4431 retain 99% pattern, excellent bores, choked IC/LM (.008/.011), internal bore diameter .665/.667, 2 ½” chambers, tight ribs, minimum barrel wall thickness 30 thou right, 28 thou left, no dents, near perfect. The 29” Damascus barrels of gun #4432 are in the same condition as #4431, with chokes of .006/.007, bore diameter of .664/.663, minimum wall thickness both barrels 29 thou. Both sets are tight on breech face and hinge pin like new, both sets fully nitro proofed after 1984 and still soundly in proof.

The actions, marked patent #354 and #355, are both full coverage tight English scroll still in excellent condition with traces of case color, actions tight, lever slight left on #1, slight right on #2, excellent screws, ejectors all work excellent, double triggers with hinged front triggers, all in incredible condition mechanically and visually for all of their 120 years of age.

The English stocks both have been professionally lengthened with the addition of a wood extension that has been “inked in” to blend with the original wood figure. Wonderfully done bringing the LOP to 14 ½” both guns, with gun #1 having drop at heel of 2 1/8”, drop at comb 1 5/8”, gun #2 drop at heel 2 3/8”, drop at comb 1 ½”, both ¼” cast off. It appears that where the face falls on the comb will give the same sight picture on both guns despite the different measurements to get you there. Stocks can be altered to your specs by bending or other length modifications for a small fee. No splits, cracks, repairs, excellent checkering, superb wood to metal fit. These guns are a wonderful matched set.

The factory oak and leather case has been restored and is fitted to the guns. At 5lbs. 15oz. and each balanced precisely 3/8” ahead of the hinge pin, they are a dream to handle. The Dickson Round Action is brutishly strong as the firing mechanism is contained on the trigger plate leaving substantial amounts of steel to support the stresses of firing. Fully proofed for 2 ½”, 1oz. loads you can have a “BLAST” hunting the uplands or cleaning up at the clays course. Can you imagine the history behind these guns, the places they have been? Miller was a Colonel in the Scots Greys and saw deployment in India and Africa. IF EVER THERE WAS AN INVESTMENT QUALITY SET OF SHOTGUNS, THIS IS IT. Dickson Round Actions are very rare to find at all. This set is the epitome of the genre.
