This Smith & Wesson .38 Special Military & Police Model 10-5 was manufactured in late 1972 or early 1973 according to its D479xxx serial number. This old service revolver is very attractive and well preserved. Its principal surface detraction is from lock scouring on the front area of the trigger guard where it was racked at the end of the patrol shift during its law enforcement career. Otherwise, there is only moderate holster whitening on its sharp edges, corners of the grip frame, edges of the cylinder, and sides of the muzzle area of the barrel. Left side of the frame exhibits some occasional speckling but this affects only about 5 percent of the total surface area. Color Casehardening to the serrated service trigger and hammer is strong, 80 percent or so by our estimate; and that is what we rate this revolver finishwise, Very Good, about 80 percent. Photos, at any rate, should suffice for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. This Model 10 is Excellent mechanically. Bore, cylinder chambers, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone is minimal, only a faint etchy shallow impress that traverses the width of the top strap. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a perfect .007; and these facts, coupled with the absence of blue wear to the ejector rod, indicates to us that this revolver has not undergone very much firing, certainly not with +P rounds. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels an additional 10 to 15 degrees on all six positions after the cylinder times in double action. On single action, the hammer travels 25 to 30 degrees on all six after timing, and the single action trigger pull is a crisp 3 5/8 pounds. Lateral play to the cylinder is moderate, about 1 1/2 mm total, with the trigger relaxed. With the trigger pulled all the way, however, there is no lateral movement at all to the cylinder. Grips are the original issue magnas, Very Good Condition, with light wear to their surfaces.
