Description: This is a U.S. MODEL 1816 HARPERS FERRY MUSKET – TYPE II (1822 to 1832). Converted to percussion from original flintlock, this musket (not rifled) is .69 caliber, and the barrel is 42" long. It has a stud on top of the barrel at the muzzle for the attachment of a socket bayonet. No rear sight was equipped. The barrel is completely brown in color and mostly smooth with the exception of pitting around the nipple and breech top area from powder splash. The breech plug tang is dated 1823. The barrel is attached to the stock by three flat faced barrel bands with the upper band being a double loop style. The bands are retained in the stock by band springs. The bands are also brown in color. Sling swivel is located on the middle barrel band and a front sight is located on the lower loop of the upper barrel band. Ramrod is present. The lock plate is also brown in color with little rust present. The lock tail is well marked "HARPERS/FERRY/1823" and there is an eagle over "US" ahead of the hammer. The stock is in very good condition although it has average dents and light scratches. It is sound and not cracked or split, with only a small piece of wood missing at the left side of the upper tang. There are cartouches visible on the left flat of the breech stock, and seem to be two circle types as well as some letters, one of which is a "V". Standard musket butt plate is present and does have some moderate pitting on it. The trigger guard with sling swivel is also brownish blue with only slight pitting on lower tang. The gun has been kept oiled, the sling swivels are easily moved, the lock works well, and the overall condition of the gun is very good. We can take VISA or MasterCard for an additional 4% fee. We'll also consider trade for U.S. silver and gold coins at spot value.
