Description: This is a fairly scarce, late 1st Generation Colt Single Action Army revolver (serial #355835). It is standard blue and case colored gun with hard rubber, eagle-less grips (properly numbered to gun) and a 7.5” barrel. What’s special is that it is a pre-war .38 Special. Research shows that if one includes all the long cartridge .38 calibers (.38 Colt Special - 82, .38 S&W Special – 25, and the .38-44 - 2), they total only 109 SAA’s made in these calibers.

The Colt’s condition is probably in excess of 90% original finish. There is some blue wear at the muzzle and the forward edge of the ejector tube, and some on sharp edges. There are also some storage marks here and there. The frame has some shallow pitting overall but the muted case colors are prominent. There is pitting more on one side of the cylinder than the other and the sides of the hammer show the same freckling. The mechanics are perfect as is the bore.

Serial numbers match (frame and inside on trigger guard and back strap) and the rear of the cylinder has the last two digits of the serial number. The front of the cylinder is marked with a five-pointed star. Kopec says this was probably to denote the fact that this cylinder was made of a special high tensile strength steel used after the introduction of the .357 Magnum cartridge (and usually observed above serial number 355,000).

At this point, the barrel marking of “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .38 SPECIAL” meant the gun would chamber all of the following: .38 Short Colt, .38 Long Colt, .38 Colt Special, .38 S&W Special (full and mid-range loads), .38 Colt Special High Speed, .38 S&W High Speed and .38-44 S&W Special.

Colt Archives has no manufacture date or shipping information on this gun, as frequently is the case for guns made in the 1930’s. The box appears to be original.
