Description: Gunsmiths worthy of the name have always been in short supply everywhere, especially here in West Tennessee. One of the best ones ever was Mr. Rip Fanning, born Innes B. Fanning, 1898 – 1982, who was better known as a Professional Baseball Manager in the middle part of the 20th Century. Mr. Rip served as gunsmith for Anderson Sporting Goods in neighboring Lexington, Tennessee, from his retirement from baseball in the late 1950s until the early 1970s. His refinishing work was his strong suite, more durable and better looking than factory in many cases. Here is a Savage 311 type, or Pre-311 Springfield 16 gauge Side-by-Side that Mr. Rip made into a work of art some time in the 1960s for the Parker’s Crossroads cotton farmer who was its exclusive owner. Barrel is 30 inch, 2 3/4 inch chamber, with .657 muzzle right tube and .647 full left tube. Serial number is T60000 range with the letter B armorer’s mark; this shotgun was probably manufactured and bought new in 1950. Buttstock and forend are original walnut, high gloss Fanning refinish with minimal amounts of pre-finish wear visible. Buttstock length of pull is exactly 14 3/4 inches from the face of the forward right tube trigger to the end of the classic Red Head recoil pad. The 16 gauge 30 inch Full and Modified choked barrels and 8 pound weight makes that pad necessary. Center of gravity is at the rear of the forend, where it’s supposed to be. Metal finish to the receiver is a very attractive purplish tint with moderate polishing dimming to the word Springfield on its left side. The only barrel marking, the guage, has minimal polish dimming. Both chambers are clean and excellent; left tube shows some internal surface etchiness, but no visible pitting, for about 12 inches forward of its chamber. Right tube is bright, clean, and excellent. This shotgun is mechanically sound throughout. They don’t make them like this any more; in fact, they never did to begin with until Mr. Rip got hold of this fine old piece. Don't let your buddies use your account. Registered user must be the buyer, with his or her own money. Buying firearms and related items for other people can result in felony charges. Don't try, either, to circumvent any law; for example, a California civilian may not buy a high capacity magazine and have it shipped to his brother-in-law in Nevada. That is a felony.
GA Pay buyers are NOT charged until we confirm we have the item and are ready to ship it. The same thing is true for phone-in, fax-in, and mail-in payments. In this respect, and in several others, Guns America outshines all its competitors. This is the best firearms website there is, hands down.
