From the peak of their production years, early Reagan Era by our estimate, comes this highly distinctive Carl Schleiper #356 Guide Knife. We believe it is constructed of chrome vanadium steel, and here what we call a knife with real metal it really has no peers. Eye brand knives only challengers are the classic German made Pumas, and this one is so strongly made it is even tougher, one of the best ever manufactured and included in Schleiper’s Trophy Line from its period of manufacture. Construction is from a single piece of legendary Solingen Steel that measures .208 thick on its forward side flats. Cutting segment is hollow ground with serrations on the lower area of the cutting edge; and grip serrations on the upper edge next to the pommel as the photos show. Overall length is 10 3/4 inches, with 6 1/4 inches of blade proper. Pommel piece appears to be polished alloy, and the handle panels are genuine German Stag with substantially made steel and brass anchor rivets. This knife comes to us from a private collection in the northern section of the Mississippi Delta. It has never been sharpened or used. Its only surface detractions are a bit of scouring on the pommel’s lower edges and fewer than a half dozen tiny spots on the chrome steel blade. Scabbard is original factory, but appears to be U.S. Made with classic 1970s light brown basketweave pattern leather. This is the first of these knives we’ve had in 25 years or more, and one of fewer than a dozen we’ve ever had in our store, even back during the late 1970s and early 1980s when we dealt lots of knives.
