Here is a worthy specimen from the last year or two of Winchester Production in the old plant in New Haven, Connecticut, a Model 70 Pro Shadow bolt action with specially molded black synthetic stock and pfixed composite floorplate. The stock is tapered with sure-gripping oval pebbled surfaces, and the metal is weather-and-wear resistant dura-touch. Barrel length is 24 inches, chambered in the potent and viable .270 Winchester Short Magnum caliber. Length of pull from the center of the serrated face adjustable trigger to the end of the 1-inch Magnum rubber recoil pad is only 13 1/4 inches, and overall length is a well balanced 43 3/4 inches. Trigger pull is the original factory setting, a crisp but tight 4 1/2 pounds. It has not been altered. Weight empty is 7 pounds. This rifle comes furnished with Weaver #46 and #47 scope mounts, and they will accept any Weaver or Picatinny type scope rings. Safety, of course, is traditional three position Winchester: safe, unload safe, and fire. Surface detractions are minimal, only a faint amount of whitening to the edges of the muzzle, faint amount of toning and fading to the bolt surface jewelling, and small amounts of scouring on the bottm areas of the stock. We rate this 70 Pro Shadow as Excellent, since no more than 10 percent of its finish is affected by handling or contact in our estimation.
