Here is a relic of Egypt’s movement into the modern world and industrial age, an Egyptian Army issue specimen of the Remington model 1868, or 1870, Rolling Block Rifle, chambered in the .41 Egyptian, or 11.15x58R, black powder caliber. Some 60,000 of these rifles were manufactured for Isma’il Pasha’s Army, with about 1/4 of them winding up in France. Barrel is 34 inch with blade front sight and military style rear sight. Note that the elevation block is missing on the rear sight. Overall length is 50 inches. Manufacturer was Remington Arms of Ilion, New York. Tang stamping is almost totally obliterated, but part of the word Patent is still visible. Arabic issue marks are visible on the top of the barrel, forward of the receiver, and on the upper left side of the receiver with the Egyptian crest. Surface detractions are extensive, these rifles were Rode Hard and Put Up Wet. Metal surfaces are dark brown patina with faint amounts of bluing visible on the side plate , hammer, and block. Stock and forend are original with cartrouches, but note the damge to the right side of the stock’s tang area. We rate this rifle as poor, perhaps fair, but photos ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore is above average for black powder cartridge rifles. We estimate it shows only 10 percent pitting. Mechanism is operable and the hammer stands correctly. This rifle came to us from a Colorado Estate.
