Lefever A Grade Skeet 16 ga. LOTS OF CONDITION, 2 BARREL SET
The Ithaca Gun Co. produced the “Lefever Nitro” using the well known name of Dan Lefever to call attention to their affordable but well made double shotguns. They utilized this marketing to produce a group of Lefevers with nicer fit and finish and with a variety of configurations which they labeled the Lefever A Grades, with nicer wood, checkering, some line engraving, and they looked nearly identical to their more costly Ithaca NID era guns. Ithaca actually produced 6 different configurations in the A Grades from a field style, to a single barrel trap, to the very low production Model 6 Skeet gun. This gun is one of these Model 6 “Special Skeet Guns” with single trigger, beavertail forend, ejectors, double ivory beads, and the skeet chokes of the day, PLUS A SET OF 30" F/F BARRELS. Serial number 302257 made in 1937, the second year of production. The Model 6 was discontinued in 1939 with a very small number made, likely less than 1000 guns in all gauges, less than a 100 or so in 16ga.. The Lefever A Grade Skeet is an excellent skeet gun even today, and this one is in very nice original condition.
Fitted with 26" and 30" barrels, both sets have double ivory beads, ejectors, tight ribs, fit tight on breech face and hinge pin, clear sharp lettering, mirror bores, 2 3/4" chambers. The 26" barrels are choked SK1/SK2 (.006/.010), bore diameter .674/.672, minimum barrel wall thickness 22 thou right, 29 thou left, 99% blue. The 30" barrels are choked F/F (.032/.033, can be altered to your specs for $90 per barrel), bore diameter .666 right, .667 left, minimum barrel wall thickness 30 thou right, 24 thou left, 93% blue with handling marks, no dents or dings.
The action retains 75% case color, excellent screws, action tight with lever centered, line engraving, single non-selective trigger is excellent, 99% trigger guard blue, all mechanically excellent and a very clean, well cared for look.
The nicely figured stock is factory deluxe checkered with the panels on the head of the stock nicely checkered, not often seen on A Grades but definitely factory applied. The finish is excellent, as new checkering, 14 1/4" LOP to factory Ithaca pad from REAR TRIGGER POSITION, 2 3/8" drop at heel, 1 5/8" drop at comb, neutral cast (can be bent to your specs within 14 days of purchase), a really nice looking set of wood with good modern dimensions.
The Ithaca Lefever A Grade Skeet Special is an affordable vintage American double set up for skeet shooting or any upland or clay target game that more open chokes would be your choice. The second set of barrels makes for a very versatile and desirable package. These guns are well respected and sought after by those in the know and make for a good investment quality gun at an affordable price. You will not likely have another chance to own such a unique Lefever A Grade.
