Just a few years ago, Remington supplemented their military grade UMC cartridge line with the very popular .38 Special +P proof loaded .38 Special with Remington’s distinctive and effective Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point 125 grain bullet. The bullet itself is lead-tipped with a scalloped edge jacket for optimal expansion. This round develops up to 950 feet per second from standard 4 inch barrel revolvers like the Smith & Wesson 586-8 showing in some of the photos, and delivers almost 250 foot pounds of energy. +P hot loaded ammunition like this should only be used in firearms that are rated strong enough to withstand it. Many are not, notably Smith & Wesson .38 Special J frame revolvers manufactured prior to about 1995, including Chief’s Special Airweights; and Rossi .38 Special Revolvers from the same production period.
