Relevant date code letters on this Remington 552 BDL Speedmaster Rifle are D W, September 1972 production date. The 552 series began in 1957, but we paid scant attention to them until Remington discontinued the 550 series in 1970. This specimen comes to us from its exclusive owner, from the collection of a West Tennessee Finance Officer. As far as specs, manufacturer of course is Remington Arms of Ilion, New York. Construction is steel barrel, magazine tube, and internal parts; American Walnut stock and forend; brass inner mag tube; and black anodized alloy receiver and trigger group housing. Barrel is 24 inch, substantially more desirable than the current production number 5594 in 21 inch. Chambering is for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle cartridges interchangeably. Magazine capacity is 19 rounds of .22 Long Rifle, or 20 rounds of .22 Long, or 24 rounds of .22 Short. Finish is blue steel on the steel surfaces, including the .240 flat faced trigger; semi gloss anodized on the receiver and trigger guard; and DuPont RKW high gloss finish on the cut checkered stock and forend. Action is blowback semi-automatic; steel deflector shield; cross bolt push button safety; and 3/8 inch grooved receiver for easy scope mounting. Sights are original screw on purple heat blue finished front, and step elevation adjustable, screw windage adjustable, white diamond notch rear two piece, also screw mounted and entirely steel construction, another departure from the currently produced 552 BDL rifles with their anodized sight bases. Overall length is 42 inches; length of pull is 13 1/2 inches from the trigger face to the end of the butt plate; weight empty is 5 3/4 pounds with center of gravity at the off hand operating handle on the slide. Surface detractions on this rifle are minimal to negligible, principally age dulling to the buttstock’s finish that is not readily visible. We rate it as Excellent, 90 to 95 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are bright and clean. We do not believe this rifle has been fired more than 200 times during its 41 years in existence.
