Many of our fellow citizens with only a superficial knowledge of recent firearms history are clueless as to why the NRA endorses so many blue dog Democrats. That practice has always held, but the biggest jolt to that practice came from an arbitrary and capricious Executive Order issued not by a Democratic President, but by a supposedly dyed-in-the-wool Republican, the Elder Bush in 1989, shortly after he took office. A president can issue orders affecting imports, and that is what led, more than anything, to the shape of California’s Roberti-Roos law and to the federal ban of 1993 enacted by Congress with substantial numbers of Republican votes. This rifle is a specimen of the way that Chinese manufacturers complied with the elder Bush’s ban, the MAK-90 rifle chambered in the original Kalashnikov 7.62x39 caliber, only with no bayonet lug and a thumb hold stock instead of a pistol grip. Thus it complied with the Bush Ban and with Sporting Purpose language enacted in the 1968 Gun Control Act. This MAK-90 is one of several imported by I.D.E. in Southfield, Michigan, in rabidly anti-gun Congressman David Bonior’s old district. It comes to us from the collection of one of our local retired barristers, and has been fired precious little. Most of its surface detractions come simply from storage; there is a moderate amount of scuffing and scouring on the brown-finished stock , forend and gas guard; and moderate, mostly inconspicuous spotty toning here and there on the brushed blue metal. We rate it as a strong Very Good, close to Excellent, specimen finish wise since no more than 15 percent of its finish is affected by our estimate. It has both its original steel Norinco 10 round magazines, but we will sub 30 round Romanian mags at the buyer’s option for jurisdictions where the 30 rounders are not restricted. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Type, of course, is semi-auto gas operated Kalashnikov rifle; barrel is 16 1/2 inch blued bore; wight empty is 7 1/2 pounds; length of pull is 14 inches from trigger to the end of the rubber recoil pad; sights are stepped military rear with calibrations from 100m to 800m with post adjustable front sight.
