1797 SHIPS MUSKET? Guns > Rifles > Muzzleloading Pre-1899 Rifles (flint)

THIS ONE IS HARD TO DEFINE...OVERALL PATTERN REFLECTS THE INFLUENCE OF THE FRENCH CHARLEVILLE AND THE U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1795 MUSKET. THE 1795 PATTERN LOCK PLATE IS STAMPED "CANTON". FROM THAT, ONE CAN SURMISE THAT THE LOCK WAS MADE BY THOMAS FRENCH OF CANTON, MASS, CIRCA 1800. THE REST OF THE MUSKET IS SCALED DOWN WHICH IS TYPICAL OF THOSE MADE UP FOR USE ON BOARD SHIPS. THE .69 CALIBER SMOOTH BORE BARREL IS 40" LONG. NOTE THIS GUN IS BRASS MOUNTED, WHICH IS ALSO TYPICAL OF MUSKETS MADE FOR USE ON SALT WATER. ALSO, NOTE THE BAYONET LUG IS ONLY 1 1/4" FROM THE MUZZLE, WHICH SUGGESTS THAT THE MUZZLE WAS DAMAGED AND THEN CUT OFF TO MAKE IT SERVICEABLE. ALSO, THE TOP JAW APPEARS TO BE OF SPANISH DESIGN...MY GUESS IS THAT THIS PIECE WAS MADE UP BY FRENCH AND SOLD COMMERCIALLY FOR USE ON A MERCHANT SHIP IN THE PERIOD FROM AROUND 1800 AND THRU THE WAR OF 1812. THE FACT THAT THE U.S. AND EAGLE STAMPS HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE LOCK PLATE SUGGESTS THIS ITEM WAS TAKEN BY AN ENEMY AND THEN REWORKED AND REISSUED FOR USE AGAINST US?....ANY INPUT WOULD BE APPRECIATED... SOME GUIDELINES: All cartridge firing firearms must be transferred through a licensed FFL dealer in your state. Buyer to supply a signed copy of local dealer’s license before shipment will be made. A C&R License is acceptable for C&R firearms, (guns determined to be C&R’s by ATF and/or guns known to be at least 50 years old). Antique firearms and replicas require buyer to supply proof of age.
