According to Mr. Stoner, the Ithaca 37 Parkerized M&P Riot Shotgun with the Duck Bill shot spreader was a preferred weapon of Navy SEAL teams during the Vietnam War. This one's serial number is 371234xxx, which dates it to 1972. We are unclear as to its exact military service record, because it has spent several years protecting and serving our fellow Americans in Jackson, Mississippi. It is correct military configuration. There is no disconnector, so this shotgun can be fired with the shooter's left hand only, holding down the trigger, if he so chooses or is sufficiently scared. Metal finish is GI Parkerized except for the matte blue shot spreader. Metal finish is strong throughout with extensive scouring at places, most noticeably on the left side of the receiver. There is another old spot on the top rear of the receiver and top tang of the pistol grip, as well as light to moderate scours here and there. Wood is traditional 37 Marine treated walnut, all original. Rear left edge of the traditional corn cob M&P forend has a moderate gouge. We rate this 37 as Very Good, since 80 percent of its original finish is intact by our estimate. Photos should suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. The finish detractions are a result of handling and storage, not from actual use. Note the bolt surface visible through the bottom of the receiver. It is only faintly marked from loading and unloading. We do not believe this shotgun has been fired more than 300 rounds. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. This is an excellent shotgun in correct Viet Nam era Mil-spec configuration. Barrel is 22 inches including the spreader, 20 inches of barrel proper. Length of pull is original dead 14 inches. Overall length is 41 1/4 inches. Chambering is 2 3/4 inch shells only, all 37s of the period were 2 3/4 inch; and capacity is 5 plus 1 rounds. Weight empty is a fast-handling 6 3/4 pounds.
