“RDB” stands for Rifle, Downward-ejecting Bullpup, another innovative and unique rifle design from perhaps the most creative manufacturer in the industry today. The Bullpup configuration and rotating-bolt action pack a 17" barrel into a rifle that is only 27.3" long, over 15% shorter than conventional AR-15 rifles of the same barrel length even with stocks fully collapsed . Even though the action, chamber, and magazine are located behind the trigger in bullpups, Kel Tec's design preserves the same stock dimensions and action cross section as conventional rifles, and Kel-Tec's well-designed trigger linkage results in a light, approximately 5lb pull. The downward-eject feature, which shucks spent shells straight down from the rear of the rifle, improves on the earlier RDB .308's chute-based, forward-eject pattern, resulting in more reliable function while meeting the goal of a truly ambidextrous bullpup design that does not dump brass in one's ear. The RDB uses NATO standard AR-15-type magazines, which are inexpensive, reliable, and widely available.
This 5.56 Nato (.223 Rem) RDB is a short-stroke, piston-operated semi-automatic rifle with AR-type rotating bolt and adjustable gas system. The matte black, nitride-coated 4140 steel barrel is 17" long, tipped with a removeable A2-style flash hider screwed onto ½ x28 muzzle threads, resulting in a complete rifle that is only 27” long. The operating handle is mounted on the left fore-end in an HK MP5 / G3 pattern for maximum leverage and ergonomics in the bullpup configuration. The remaining controls are completely ambidextrous, including large safeties on either side of the lower grip assembly and a single, large, centrally located mag-release paddle just in front of the mag well. Kel Tec has tuned the trigger pull, often a weak point in Bullpup rifles, to a light 5 lb pull.The exterior color scheme is all black including the polymer foreend, grip assembly, and rear receiver shell, with the steel barrel, receiver, and controls finished in matte black. A Mil-Spec, indexed, Picatinny rail is attached rigidly to the barrel and gas system, and a similar rail is molded into the base of the polymer foreend. The sling is a 1 ¼” black nylon unit and there are 8 ambi attachment points scattered over the rifle compatible with the provided sling as well as after-market single hook types. The RDB comes with one (1) 20-round Gen 3 PMAG magazine, complete with protective cover, and the rifle accepts any aftermarket standard STANAG AR-15 type magazines.This rifle is an extremely functional and capable 5.56 Nato rifle offered in a highly compact package.
