When you think of the very finest made, BEST QUALITY sidelock double shotguns, Purdey and Sons of London, England must be mentioned in the top 5 of the worlds finest manufacturers of fine doubles. With a history dating back nearly 2 centuries (1814), Purdey and Sons is the epitome of the gun maker’s art. This fine shotgun, sn27820, was made in the mid-1970’s and is in as new condition with virtually all of its case color and fine oil finish remaining. The only noticeable wear is on the barrels in the vicinity of the forend/breech area. Made as a light game gun at 6 1/4lbs., it is in proof for 2 ½” loads. This is an opportunity to invest in a very valuable double shotgun at a fraction of the cost of new AND WITHOUT THE WAITING PERIOD FOR PRODUCTION!
The 28” barrels retain 99% original blue, mirror bores, choked IC/M (.010/.026, can be altered to your specs for $60 per barrel), internal bore diameter of .735/.733, ribs tight with barrels that ring true, single bead, no dents or dings, ejectors strong and timed, self-opening mechanism, minimum barrel wall thickness 27 thousandths right, 29 thousandths left, barrels tight on breech face and hinge like a new gun, all in excellent condition.
The fabulous sidelock action is engraved in the well known Purdey style rose and scroll, still clear and sharp, with 99.5% vivid case color, perfect screws, cocking indicators, action tight with lever right of center, double triggers with crisp pulls, trigger guard retains 99% factory niter blue, all as new in this fine double.
The richly figured walnut is English style grip with checkered butt, splinter forend, retaining nearly all of its delightful oil finish, clear, sharp checkering and drop points, superb wood to metal fit, 14 3/16” LOP, 2 1/8” drop at heel, 1 9/16” drop at comb, 3/8” cast off (stock can be bent to your specs for about $150-$200), no splits, chips, cracks, or repairs anywhere in the wood. Simply stunning.
The gun comes in maker’s motor case with Purdey accessories and a factory letter has been ordered to document the history of this fine firearm. Balanced to perfection just ahead of the hinge pin, it is truly a dynamic handling game gun that makes others pale in comparison. Prices today will approach or exceed $100,000 if you choose to order one new, with a likely year long wait for your gun to arrive for your pleasure.
