Spanish Model 1893 Mauser 7x57mm Mauser. It is rare to find a Spanish Mauser rifle brought back from the Spanish-America war, but it is even rarer to be able to document where it was captured and who brought it back over a hundred years ago but that is what we have here. This rifle was captured at the battle of Guayama in Puerto Rico in 1898 and brought back to the US by Major George D. Sherman of the 3rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The pictures of the 3rd Illinois in Puerto Rico in 1898 are from the 1902 book ”The Official and Pictorial Record of the War with Spain and Philippines”. The picture of the Spanish troops at Guayama is a public domain photo from Wikipedia. We have been un-able to document Major Sherman from available on-line records however these records do list Carlton C. Taylor whom the rifle was passed down to as a veteran of company I of the 3rd Illinois. This rifle is a Pre-1898 Antique so no FFL is required, its overall condition is very good and should cleanup to even better, but we are selling it as a non-shooter, the bolt is miss-matched and the rifle has excess headspace.
