Here is the surviving descendant of the 1905 Hand Ejector Smith & Wesson, the .38 Military & Police Stainless, the Model 64-8 in its latest configuration. This is one of only three Smith & Wesson K frames still in production, along with the 67 and 617. Note the lengthened, beefed up frame that came in 1998 with the Sixth engineering change that also included the introduction of the Metal Injected Molded Hammer and Trigger with floating firing pin. Note also the keyed internal lock that marked the Seventh Engineering Change, and finally, the two piece barrel system introduced in 2004, the eighth engineering change. This is the definitive, state-of-the-art .38 Special Service Revolver. For homeowners who choose to own a handgun, this is the simplest, least dangerous, and best balanced. Veteran security personnel and novice handgunners can operate the Model 64 under considerable pressure with simplicity and accuracy. It is a much better choice than the lighter and lighter crop of handguns that are now in vogue. Many people simply cannot operate the small automatics, and many people also have the very wrong notion that small handguns will not produce heavy recoil, and bigger ones will.
