HG6771 From its 20,000 range serial number, this Smith & Wesson Chief’s Special was manufactured in 1952, only the Third Year of Production for the J Frame. It comes to us from the collection of a distinguished Peace Officer who has served in Kansas, Missouri, and Texas. Numbered model later came to be 36, but Smith & Wesson did not assign model numbers until the late 1950s. Note its factory walnut Diamond pattern Magna / Service grip panels. These are matching number to the butt serial number, and the cylinder serial number matches as well. Yoke and frame’s yoke mating area forward of the cylinder bear matching 72000 range armorer’s fitting numbers, but these are not the serial number of the revolver. Note the original flat serrated thumb latch and distinctive short checkered spur factory .240 width hammer. Trigger is matching serrated face color casehardened. Construction, of course, is blue steel – double action pocket revolver, capacity 5 rounds of standard velocity only .38 Special caliber ammunition. This early Chief, of course, is a 5 screw, with 4 screws on its side plate and a fifth on the front of the trigger guard. Barrel is 2 inches, pinned into the frame. Surface detractions on this 1952 S&W are minimal, only faint muzzle whitening, faint edge whitening and cylinder flute whitening. Rotation marking is moderate. We rate this Chief as Excellent, 90 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffcie for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is certainly excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. From the absence of any significant blast effect to the frame top strap under side, and from mild lead deposits in that area and moderate cylinder face blacking, we estimate this revolver has been fired 200 or 300 times, all with Lead Round Nose ammunition.
