Armed and Ready: Texas’ Big Shift to Bolster School Security

Big changes are coming to Texas schools this year. Security will see a massive upgrade. Gov. Greg Abbott just signed a new law.

HB 3 was unveiled in a recent meeting at the capital. It demands one armed officer or staff on every public school campus.

The Intercultural Development Research Center dropped some big numbers. An armed guard could cost schools a whopping $100,000 yearly.

San Antonio local, April Reyna, backs the plan. “My tax money should go towards that. I support it,” she told KSAT.com. Supporters like Reyna think armed good guys can stop armed evildoers.

This law doesn’t stop at guards. It pours $330 million into campus security centers. Austin legislators believe it will strengthen the School Safety Center.

Not only will safety info reach all schools, but it will also demand yearly protocol audits. Staff members will get mental health training.

There’s a big question mark over funding. Will some schools need to dip into local revenue to manage the extra salaries? These concerns loom as the new school year approaches.
