Eliminating These May Reduce Mass Shooting Deaths, Study Finds

Gun-free zones are murder magnets.
This simple pie chart helps paint the picture. However, it is not from Moody’s recent study. It comes from an earlier study put out by the Crime Prevention Research Center, where Moody is the research director. (Photo: CPRC)

A recent study conducted by economist Carlisle E. Moody from the College of William and Mary, suggests a potential strategy to reduce mass public shooting deaths. That is, embracing a law-abiding citizen’s right to carry concealed firearms by eliminating gun-free zones.

The study, which assesses various gun control policies, contributes fresh insights to the conversation about how to prevent these tragic events.

Moody’s research implemented an advanced difference-in-differences methodology to critically assess several policies suggested as possible ways to mitigate mass public shootings.

Given the severity of the crime and the fact that many shooters plan their attacks expecting to die in the process, Moody’s study delved into the complicated matter of what kinds of laws could effectively deter such criminals.

Moody’s research is not the first to explore potential policy responses to mass public shootings.

Prior studies have proposed and analyzed various policies, including right-to-carry laws, permit-less carry laws, and the reduction of gun-free zones. These studies suggest that if potential perpetrators don’t know who might shoot back, it could deter mass shootings.

However, Moody’s research differentiates itself in a significant way. It is the first study of its kind to use a novel methodology to examine the efficacy of state laws aimed at reducing deaths from mass public shootings.

This innovative approach brings an additional level of complexity to the discussion and prompts us to consider the issue from different angles.

The study scrutinized nine gun-related policies and four traditional crime-control policies. These policies were the ones deemed potentially effective based on past research and popular discourse on the subject.

Despite the promise shown by some policies in earlier studies, particularly permit-to-purchase laws and large-capacity magazine bans, Moody’s research concluded that these, along with the other policies investigated, did not significantly reduce the number of people killed in mass public shootings.

This result is consistent with the study’s premise. If individuals are willing to commit severe crimes and die in the act, they are unlikely to be deterred by laws with less serious consequences.

Given this challenge, it becomes evident that creating effective policies is an extremely intricate task.

Nevertheless, Moody’s research did yield one promising finding. There was evidence that the number of mass public shooting deaths was lower in areas that allowed concealed carry of firearms.

As the study notes, “There is evidence that increasing the number of places where ordinary citizens are allowed to
carry concealed weapons could reduce the number of mass shooting fatalities.”

This discovery should influence future policy discussions. It should also serve as a starting point for additional research. Let’s hope that our elected officials are paying attention.

GunFreeZones are a “feel good” response by misinformed and liberal politicians who totally ignore the fact that criminals, by definition, do not obey laws. In every example of genocide and oppression of a people Step #1 has been the disarming of the group to be oppressed. This is the Leftist goal and does not bode well for the future of America and the free world. These forces must be overcome if freedom is to survive.

Its seems very possible a homicidal and suicidal shooter could kill dozens if not hundreds of unarmed ticket holders as they stand in line waiting to go through metal detectors at a major league baseball game or concert venue. The security at these gates is usually unarmed and lax. By allowing CCW holders to carry into these events would help deter this potentially disastrous outcome, as the author suggests.

If a mass shooter goes into a building with the intent to kill mass numbers of people knowing very well he/she will most likely not be walking out alive is very telling. It tells me that if, there were ccw holders present with their carry gun, (in an area not know as a “GUN FREE ZONE”) then the chances of that shooter dying before causing a large number of fatalities, would be much greater than waiting for cops to finally decide to arrive and eventually do their job. (Response time and Waiting for the right time, cowardness figured in). The ccw holder on-site becomes the first on scene defender. Being right there when the Shit hits the fan, is a BIG advantage. To be honest, I am a trained ccw holder, but due to all the stupid limitations on where you can and cannot carry, I am not comfortable carrying my carry gun. I mean if your walking down the street and you pass a school or some other Gun Free zone what are you supposed to do with that carry gun? Oh sure, If I knew I was going to be close to a gun free zone I could leave the gun in the car/truck, but then you stand the chance of being seen removeing it from concealment to put it in a gun safe for safe LEGAL storage, I mean in California where can you park your vehicle that your not worried about it getting broken into. I know this is a stretch in some cases but I mean to show how stupid some of the State Laws are. If you cannot have your carry gun on your person when and where it is needed than way carry at all? My other fear is that with all the gun hysteria circulating in the media, news radio papers magazines etc. If a person catches an accidental glimpse of your carry piece, the first thing you know they are screaming GUN! What Then? They don’t know you, they don’t know if you have a ccw, they don’t know if your trained all they know if you have a GUN. And they automatically think your going to shoot somebody.
