A look at the new MLOK rail.
The consensus around AR manufacturers this year seems to be the new attachment system fight is over. Much like Betamax vs. VHS, Bluray vs. HDDVD, Christina Aguilera vs. Brittney Spears, we have our champion. MLOK has trounced Keymod — sorry if you bought a flashlight in the losing model.
LWRC introduced a new MLOK rail for their firearms this year, with attachment points at the three, six, and nine, as well as 45-degree offsets for the top half.
Also new this year, LWRC has changed the way they make Kalifornia compliant models for those of you out there in the Republic of Feinstein. If there is one thing we know about Oakland, Compton, and Watts, it is that the reduced capacity in AR-15s and the removal of “assault features” has caused crime to cease in those neighborhoods. Cough, Cough.
Do you live in California?
LWRC has done CA residents ua solid, though, in changing the way they make things compliant. Rather than a bullet button, they have a plunger inside the receiver that blocks the magazine release. Fast and easy, all you have to do is drop out the rear take down pin, open the receiver, then the plunger comes up. Hit your mag release, like the rest of us in the free states, and ta-da, the magazine falls out.
The best part about this? LWRC wouldn’t say because they aren’t stupid, but it looks to me very much like an end user removable part, should you go on vacation to Arizona. Even if it’s not, 30 seconds with a Dremel tool solves the problem, should you leave California permanently like a smart Ranger. The up charge to make it CA legal is $35 for any model LWRC makes, which is a bargain in the compliance world.

Here we go, now you’ve done it. No one is talking about a damn thing other than which is better keymod or m-lock. If you recall, Betamax last to the consumer market, but it is all the media used for a decade prior to DVD. So, maybe this is the same deal. Keymod for the operators and M-lock for the unwashed masses maybe that’s what the “m” stands for… 🙂 and yes I do know who invented it. I agree m-lock looks better, but keymod is a quicker swapping system albeit that makes it easier to knock loose too, but in the end who cares. Whatever works for you…!

Are you being serious? Who cares if lights or optics or grips gets pretty easily stripped from your weapon?
If we’re talking about a serious defensive tool, unless you’ve got unnecessary, useless crap on your rifle to begin with, that’s not just a serious flaw; it’s a fatal one in both senses. MLok is objectively superior. Lower front end weight with far superior fastener security.
Add in the retail shelving/line of dicks look aspect, and this isn’t even close.
Best part about MLock? It doesn’t look like a line of d!cks.

M-Lok is more aesthetically pleasing and easier to machine (hence cheaper for manufacturer’s) which is probably why you saw more M-Lok equipped rifles at Shot Show.
However, KeyMod rails are the first to go “out of stock” when there is a sale on both, which would seem to indicate that actual users/buyers prefer KeyMod.
The great success of 2016 was arguably the Sig MCX/MPX platform, winning LE and Anti-terror contracts in the UK (who were early adopters), Holland (in .300BLK no less) and all over the US – Sig Sauer chose KeyMod and it is establishing wide support for their platform. It’s much harder to topple an established system that is already gaining global usage.
Other users of KeyMod are the US Army’s XM2010 sniper rifle, HK, Barrett, BCM and dual providers like Daniel Defense, VLTOR, Noveske, LWRC etc. who are simply hedging their bets.
It appears to be military/LE have already chosen KeyMod… unless you know of an anti-terror/military/law-enforcement unit anywhere that is actively using M-Lok??

MLOK is also stronger, material around the slots.
Key mod may go out of stock earlier but that could be an indicator the stores ordered more mlok inventory. There was a survey done awhile ago where distributors /manufacturers were asked which sold more. I think the average was 3:1 in favor of Mlok.
