For most gun owners, a broken or malfunctioning gun is nothing more than an inconvenience. But for military and law enforcement personnel, a failure to fire can be the deciding factor between a safe trip home and a body bag.
Police departments and military units require manufacturers like Remington to guarantee a higher level of quality control than most civilian customers, but now Remington Defense is making that quality available to the consumer marketplace.
“These aren’t guns you keep in your safe and take our every deer season,” Remington Defense’s Andrew Engelbert told GunsAmerica at this year’s NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits. “These are working guns, designed to take a beating in the real world.”
Engelbert explain that Remington manufactures military/LE firearms in a separate section of their factory in Illion, New York. Each firearm is hand built and hand tested by the company’s most experienced gunsmiths to ensure that it functions every time, no matter what.
Remington Defense plans to offer three shotguns, two rifles, and three precision rifles to the consumer marketplace. No word yet on MSRP, but customers can expect a fairly significant markup over the civilian versions of each firearm.
Precision Rifles – Model 700P, 700P USR, 700P LTR, 700P LTR TWS
The Model 700 LTR Tactical Weapons System (TWS) features 5R rifling specially designed for superior gas seal and reduced bullet deformation for improved accuracy. The receiver is also built for maximum strength. It features a recessed bolt face that encloses the cartridge head for maximum protection against case rupture. The barrel surrounds the bolt shroud for additional strength, and the barrel is cold hammer forged carbon steel.
In the field, the ultra-fast locktime of 2.5-3.0 milliseconds is, according to Remington, the best in the industry and minimizes the effect of shooter movement for greater shot-to-shot accuracy.
The 40XP adjustable trigger breaks like glass, and the action is smooth.

Tactical Semi-Autos – Model R4, R10
Remington’s R4 is chambered in 5.56 NATO and features a hammer forged, chrome-lined 4150 carbon steel barrel measuring 16 inches with a 1:7” right-hand twist. The stock is a MagPul SLR and the Keymod handguard is from Midwest Industries. The iron sights are from Troy.
The R10 is chambered in 7.62mm NATO / .308 WIN but is designed to have a comparable weight, dimensions, and ergonomics as the R4. It features fully ambidextrous controls, and the mag release and bolt stop are integral designs to the receiver, which provides a more reliable construction compared to most bolt-on solutions.

Shotguns – 870 Police (walnut stock), 870 Police (pistol grip), 870 Marine Magnum
Remington’s 870 shotguns have been a mainstay of law enforcement and military units since its inception in 1950. At that time, it was adopted by all branches of the U.S. Military as well as by many countries around the world.
As Engelbert pointed out, these shotguns are designed to be run through a 400-round course of fire at a training range and thrown in a police cruiser without being cleaned.
“The next time they’re needed, they have to work,” Engelbert said.
The 870 is available in a variety of configurations, including a Marine Magnum model that features electroless nickel plating on all internal and external metal surfaces, including inside the barrel.

The barrel surrounds the bolt shroud?? I thought the bolt shroud was on the other end of the bolt.

So now we’re doing the same thing that we holler at firearm illiterate liberals about? “Military grade”? You know how long it’s going to take the liberals to take us to the cleaners over these firearms? That’s right…about as long as it took them to start hollering about “assault rifles” and yes, we were our own worst enemies on that one too! I might point out that every firearm I own is “military grade”! We all know that so why in hell are we telling the liberals about it?
every gun should be up to military/LE standards.
Years ago Ruger made a P4C carbine in 40.cal for law enforcement. I bought one and it is still in great shape and reliable enough that I trust it with my life. Remington has always been high quality weaponry and I suspect LEO’s and the military will benefit by using them.
Meanwhile my personal preference is the best quality and toughest rifles and shotguns made.
