Hornady released several new products this year at SHOT. The first of these that goes on the must-have list is the Rapid Safe AR Gunlocker.

Let’s face it: Even when they’re in a safe, your valuables face plenty of threats. And you can’t always be there to defend against those threats. Many of us spend a considerable amount of time away from home, which is one of the reasons why we have gun safes in the first place. As I have said in my previous articles in this series, gun safes buy you time against threats such as unauthorized access, theft and fire; they do not prevent threats entirely.

Considering the everyday risks of fire in our homes that we all face, this disaster could be in the cards for any of us. What can we do to prepare our gun safes to withstand this potential known threat?

In a perfect world we all have enough secure storage for all of our guns, and not only do our homes offer us ample space for giant safes, those safes also magically appear with no conspicuous delivery and team of installers. For the real world, there is the bolt together, take apart Snap Safe. It still arrives by truck freight, but the box does not resemble a safe, and you can take the pieces in one by one, inconspicuously, up the stairs, whatever, without advertising your safe to the neighborhood.

If you already own a safe, almost everything I describe in this article can be done for free; but there’s no free lunch, and every choice has its pros and cons. You will have to weigh your options when deciding the placement of your safe and how to anchor it.

Your guns safe is only as good as its lock, so make sure you pick what’s right for you.

Why do I need a safe? This is a question that many gun owners ask. In my opinion, the answer is easy. Bad things happen to good people (and guns).

I’m going to tell you some of what I do, but I’m not going to tell you everything because you need to choose what is right for you and your family. And storing guns when you have children in the house is much different than storing guns when you don’t.
