PWS’ Modular, Multi-Caliber Battle Rifle! Meet the UXR Rifle from PWS — SHOT Show 2024

SHOT Show 2024

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

True Pearce, the managing editor of GunsAmerica, brings us an exclusive first look at a groundbreaking firearm that’s hitting the market: the Primary Weapon Systems (PWS) UXR Rifle. This isn’t just any rifle—it’s a brand-new entry into the firearms world, and it’s packed with features that are bound to pique your interest.

True dives into the details of the UXR, a rifle that boasts a bevy of innovative features. It’s a piston-driven, fully ambidextrous, modular, and multi-caliber platform.

Currently configured in 5.56, the rifle allows easy caliber switching—just loosen a few screws, swap the barrel, and you’re basically set to shoot in 300 Blackout, 308, 6.5 Creedmoor, or even 7.62×39. This versatility extends to its magazine compatibility, with options for AK mags after a simple mag well and bolt face swap.

Auto Draft

The UXR also features side charging capabilities from either side, a non-reciprocating side charger that folds back for convenience, and a side folding stock that can be mounted to fold in either direction. What’s more, it can be fired with the stock folded, offering flexibility in various shooting scenarios.

The rifle’s 16-inch barrel with shorter and (precision rifle) longer versions on the horizon, is crafted in-house at Primary Weapon Systems. They take solid steel, machine, rifle, contour, and chamber it all under their roof, allowing them to guarantee MOA accuracy—a rare feat for a battle rifle.

In terms of customization, the UXR doesn’t disappoint. It will come with options for different colors, accessories and handguards, including full ARCA rail handguards. The upper is one solid piece, ensuring that mounting a scope or other optics won’t affect zeroing.

Auto Draft

An interesting aspect of the UXR is that the upper is the serialized part, meaning everything else can be shipped through the mail, including replacement kits or caliber conversion kits. While these kits aren’t cheap, they’re not exorbitantly priced either—around $500 for a switch from 556 to 308, for instance.

The rifle weighs in at a relatively light 6.8 lbs compared to other battle rifles. It comes with a fully adjustable stock, including an adjustable cheek piece and length of pull. It’s compatible with any AR grip and trigger and comes equipped with a 2 lb TriggerTech straight from the factory.

Another standout feature is the adjustable gas system. This allows users to adjust how much gas is blown back to tune the rifle perfectly when being shot either suppressed or unsuppressed.

True encourages viewers to check out the full interview and breakdown of the UXR rifle where every feature of the gun is dissected in detail (see extended interview below).

In closing, True questions whether the UXR could be the last rifle one might ever need to buy, or if it sounds too good to be true. What are your thoughts?

Maybe I missed it, so what about barrel twist or barrel coatings, chromed?

“Battle Rifle”? I thought this designation was for military firearms, not civilian. This throws more confusion when trying to fight anti-gunners with their ‘military weapons’ argument. Didn’t read the whole story but is this thing select fire?

The PWS UXR sounds like the answer I been looking for in a long gun AR-ish type weapon. Carrying an extra barrel/magazine well/bolt face is way more compact than another rifle when you’re out on foot, those parts can most likely just fit in my backpack. Plus paying ~500.00 dollars for another caliber is more economical. I am hopeful for this system, but will reserve my purchase until I see some gun reviews such Honest outlaw or NUTNFANCY, where they will put it through some tests and get some round counts on the system to test accuracy but most importantly endurance and reliability (yes, drop test and butt stroke a window or drywall for firing ports). Then ultimately getting my grubby hands on one to look it over and fire, just to make sure it doesn’t flex like my previously owned SCAR 17. Very hopeful on this system and could lead me to relinquishing my LMT 5.56 and SIG 716, just keeping the mags!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE PWS rifles, and I own several.
I was really excited when they teased a new product, but I was a little “meh” when it was finally revealed. I know modularity is all the rage, but it’s not really my thing. I was really hoping they were going to introduce a bullpup.

I’m interested to see what the price will be. If it’s well under 2K, it might do OK. Anything touching or over that mark puts you into sig, xcr, and the like, which are proven rifles.

Looks very much like a copy of a Robinson Arms XCR.

Looks like a scar16 meets DT MDXR

    It definitely sounds quite handy.
It would be excellent in a survival situation, where ammo is scarce.
To be able to fire whatever you can find, would be priceless.
But I do wonder how much extra stuff one would have to carry.

It would be good to know the price and when available, with a link in the article to the manufacture’s page.
