Description:

From a mid-west sale, a Antique full stock 50 caliber Percussion Rifle.  William Wingert was an American Gunmaker with a shop in Detroit Michigan in business form 1845 to 1867. The stock has a right-hand cheek piece with a carved decorative shadow line. The wood is a very nice reddish brown and is aged to a uniform color. The stock has a marvelous old repair using a large dowel pin to repair a cracked wrist, common damage on early rifles as the wooden stock of American Style rifles were thinnest behind the lock (see photos). The stock has a three piece triple pierced patch box, flush inlayed in the stock and formed into the butt plate. The patch box is very decorative and is in good functional condition (see photos).  German silver nose cap, 2 steel thimbles, brass trigger guard, side plate and crescent butt plate.  The metal finish is a uniform brown patina with no rust (see photos).  The gun is 54" over all length and the heavy 38" octagon barrel is 1 1/8 inch across the flats (see photos). What I can see of the bore looks dark; although, there are very deep riflings visible at the muzzle, I have not cleaned this gun (see photos). The ram rod appears original to the rifle.  There is a adjustable semi buckhorn rear sight and a blade front sight.  The trigger and lock function as they should.  The lock is stamped Ashmore Warranted, ( Richard Ashmore Locks – British references list him as Richard Ashmore, lockmaker, in the village of Wednesbury, Straffordshire Co., England, active 1), Although more expensive than the more common Goulcher locks, Ashmore locks were of high quality and were used by numerous American Gun Makers.  At the sale they said the muzzle end of the stock was reduced in size to fit a compact nose cap.  The repair at the wrist is 100 years old, form a time when a rifle was an important part of life and was worth repairing.  The dowel pin repair is flush with the wood of the stock displaying incredible craftsmanship. Despite the repair the stock is rock solid and it is obvious the rifle saw extensive use post repair. The repair work makes this gun a desirable piece of American Gun Maker history. The lock functions as it should, the bore is clear and the trigger is crisp. I can not guarantee a gun this old will shoot however it appears, with a little freshening up, this gun could be back in the field or on the target range. Everything appears old and original to my untrained eye but since I have no way to guarantee the origins or age of this gun I am offering it with a 100% satisfaction guarantee, if it does not live up to your expectations in any way return it for a full and speedy refund including your return shipping (see my feedback). We trade guns. No reserve.
