Description:

From a mid-west sale, a Antique Pennsylvania percussion rifle 40 caliber. The wood of the straight grained stock is aged to a uniform color with no chips, cracks or missing wood; however, there are a few light handling marks (see photos). The stock is solid (not loose) and has a steel crescent butt plate, trigger guard and fixtures (see photos). The metal finish is a mottled brown patina with some oxidation (see photos). The gun is 47" over all length with a 29" octagon barrel (What I can see of the bore looks dark....I have not cleaned this gun) the ram rod appears original. The rear sight has a notch and a blade front sight. This gun has a very unique profile (see photos). The double set triggers and lock function as they should including half cock; however the mechanism is rough from years of nonuse and needs lubricating (the trigger needs to be set before the lock is cocked). The butt plate has a toe plate and it, as well as the other fittings are flush inlayed (see photos). Stamped on the top flat of the barrel is J.P. LOWER PHILA (see photos). At the sale they supplied this additional history about the gun maker.....LOWER, John P.— Philadelphia, Pa., and Denver, Colo. Born 1833; ap prenticed at Philadelphia to Joseph C. Grubb; independent after Aug. 4, 1850. Made halfstock rifles Came to Colorado in 1868. Became a partner of Carlos Gove in Denver in 1873 until 1876 when he opened his own shop, doing business at a number of successive locations: Blake Street, Larimer, Fifteenth and at Champa. Died in 1917, at age of 84......... I can not guarantee a gun this old will shoot however it appears, with a little freshening up, this gun could be back in the field or on the target range. everything appears old and original to my untrained eye, but since I can not guarantee the origins of this gun I am offering it with a 100% satisfaction guarantee, if it does not live up to your expectations in any way return it for a full and speedy refund including your return shipping (see my feedback). We trade guns. No reserve.
