Description:

Up for sale is a very rare US Army M1900 Krag Rifle Bowie knife Bayonet & Scabbard. About 2000 were made and many of these knives ended up in the Philippines and Cuba for testing and are in rough condition when found.  This is one of the nicer, more perfect examples I've seen and is in exceptionally nice, original condition.

9" clip-point Bowie-style blade, 13.625" overall length. Obverse ricasso marked US, reverse ricasso marked 1900. Brightly polished blade. Steel hilt and pommel cap show brown patina. Walnut grip scales show minor dings but are uncracked. Blued steel scabbard with wire loop hanger retains about 95% of it's original finish with brown patina present. According to Paul Kiesling's Bayonets of the World, a total of 2,800 of these combination bayonet / entrenching tools for the Krag rifle were produced at Springfield Armory in 1900, with 1,500 sent to the Philippines and 500 sent to Cuba for field testing. Most other sources place production at only 2,000 units. The bayonet was a continuation in of the US Ordnance Department's long-standing desire to combine multiple field implements into a single multi-use tool. As most saw service in very harsh, tropical conditions they are rather scarce, particularly in fine or better condition. Overall this is a really fantastic example of a very scarce bayonet from the era of the Philippine Insurrection and the Post-Spanish American War Cuban occupation. With nearly all of the bayonets produced being shipped to one of these two American outposts, the survival rate is quite low, making these bayonets very scarce. Their rarity has caused the price to escalate over the last decade to the point where $2,500 to $3,500 (or even higher) is not uncommon for very nice examples.
