The US Rifle .30 Cal M1, designed by John Garand at SA, is one of the most significant rifle developments of the 20th Century. Adopted by the US Army in 1936, the M1 was the first semi-auto main battle rifle in any armed force, and served as the US's main infantry weapon through WWII and Korea. The rifle's accuracy, ruggedness, and firepower far outclassed any of the bolt actions fielded by the Axis or our Allies in WWII. Built around a rugged rotating-bolt, gas-operated, semi-auto action and firing the accurate .30-06 Gov't round, the M1 was also dominated service rifle competition for decades. This rifle is from SA's late-war production. Highly collectible, WWII-vintage rifles in good shape like this are prized for their innate quality and historical value.

M1 rifles are renowned for their quality and performance. Accuracy is generally outstanding with the fully adjustable GI aperture sights. Except for the stainless gas tube, all metalwork bears a durable parkerized matte dark olive-gray finish. The wood stock & hand guards are well-seasoned, dark walnut. The gas-fed, semi-auto action is remarkable for not using a detachable mag or a mag spring. An en-bloc 8-rd clip charges the fixed mag, and internal linkages work the follower to feed rounds. The system is durable and reliable. Over the past 75 years, most M1's have been arsenal reconditioned at least once. This rifle is no exception. The receiver s/n “3824xxx” has a late-war build date in June, 1945. The barrel-group date (“SA ... 5 63”) indicates that the rifle was arsenal-rebarrelled at least once after 1963. The bolt bears the part number “D28287-19SA / O-17”. The stock bears square-P (wrist) and R.R.A. cartouches. Note: This gun is over 75 years old and should be checked by a competent gunsmith before shooting. The fitted hard case bears the CMP logo.

Condition of this gun is as-received from the CMP, who rate it “Service Grade” with muzzle and throat erosion 1 and 1, respectively, essentially NRA (Modern) Very Good. Although subdued, the bore is not pitted, but reflective with well-defined rifling. The bolt face, action, and follower linkages are in excellent condition and clean although there is still some remnant grease deep in the innards of the action. The chamber is un-pitted and neutral gray. Receiver-group finish is about 95%. Edges are starting to lose their color, as have the bearing surfaces at the front of the bolt, op rod, and raceways. Otherwise, finish on the flats and contours is even and dense except for a few light scuffs. Exposed barrel finish is deeper and better preserved, about 98%, except at the tip of the muzzle and a left-side scuff. The gas tube's delicate unparkerized finish is about 90%. Finish on the sling and stacking-swivel fittings is variable, from about 10-90%, as are the hand-guard bands and clips. Light surface rust tarnishes the rear hand-guard clip. The butt plate has lost most of its finish and is slightly scuffed. Overall stock condition is Good. The wood is smooth and dark from use and repeated oilings. It shows the dings, bruises, and tool marks expected on a surplus military arm of this age. Although it has “character”, the wood shows no splits or cracks. The CMP hard case is New.
