Offered for sale is a newly built Ruger Stainless Steel 77/17 HMR Laminated Thumb-hole Varmint Rifle. The rifle started as a Ruger 77/22 and this is where the similarities end.
The original action was retained with the exception of the standard trigger assembly. The original stock was discarded for a custom Laminated Thumb-hole stock especially produced for the action and barrel combination. A new fluted Green Mountain Competition Barrel was fitted to the original action, along with a Spec-Tec Competition Trigger and Ace Trigger Shoe. Trigger is adjustable into the 10oz to 3 pound range and I don't advise it below 1 lb. The original bolt was stripped, cleaned, be-burred and reassembled with all premium David Tubs Springs and Quick Lock Time Firing Pin. Bolt sear was de-burred and polished along with the locking lugs. I labored over adding an over-sized bolt handle but decided to keep the original handle intact. This is something the new owner may decide to add in the future.
The stock was designed, cut from a solid laminated block, hand formed, inletted for the Green Mountain Competition Barrel, sealed, hand finished with over 40 coats of True Oil leveled between each coat and hand fitted to the Ruger 77 action. It's shown in the photos the time and effort made to make the fit and finish flawless. Also the rifle is equipped with; Pachmayr Decelerator butt pad with Ebony spacer.
A Volquartsen Custom Accuracy Pad kit was added to the stock and the Green Mountain Competition Barrel is free floated to the accuracy pad.
The action uses the Deluxe Ruger Stainless Rings fitted to the original action mounts, which are very strong and zero returnable if the scope is removed. Rings were lapped in preparation for mounting a Leupold Vari-X II 6 x 18 40mm Scope w/Target Turrets and equipped with both Leupold Long Sunshade & Alumina Flip-up Scope Covers. The Leupold Scope was bore-sighted with a Sweany Site-A-Line and took exactly three shot to bring to zero @100yds. Five additional shots were fired for accuracy. Center to center the group measured .312 in a slight crosswind. I believe in the right hands on a windless day, the rifle is capable of near one hole accuracy.
This is an outstanding example of a custom .17 HMR. Great care was taken in it's assembly and will bring years of accuracy and fun for any age.
No, it won't be inexpensive to purchase but you can say, you have a true one of a kind .17HMR. How do I know this, I built the rifle myself and I've been at it for over 40 years. Starting as an apprentice gunsmith attending two in residence gunsmith schools, (graduating with honors), 20 years as a US Servicemen, (Firearms Instructor and Armorer.)
