In the world of L.C. Smith 12-gauge shotguns, it is not hard to find a decent Ideal Grade…they made 18,000 of them total. However, to find one that is FACTORY ORIGINAL METAL FINISHES AND NO COMPROMISES is indeed rare and an Elsie like that will bring a premium price. There are many 90% guns, a good number of 95% guns, but only a handful that exceed 99% bold, vivid factory case color and blue. Those last few percentage points of condition are what separates common from the best! This beautiful L.C. Smith Ideal Grade on a Featherweight frame is that gun; showing as new in all ways. It still has the factory jeweling marks on the breech face of the barrels. The barrels, forend escutcheon, triggers, trigger guard, forend iron all have 99% dark factory blue with little wear. The action has 99% bold, vivid factory case color, excellent screws, sharp clear floral style engraving. The 30” barrels have perfect bores, tight ribs, and they fit tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun. The wood is in the same, pristine condition with no cracks or splits and checkering that is still sharp showing no wear. THE WOOD WAS RESTORED BY TURNBULL RESTORATIONS, BUT THE METAL IS FACTORY ORIGINAL, THE ENGRAVING STILL SHARP TO THE TOUCH. This is a Hunter Arms made gun, snFWE88208 built in 1926, a prime time for the L.C. Smith guns. You certainly won’t find a higher condition Ideal Grade ejector gun anywhere. It has been shot, so you can enjoy using the gun while it continues to gain value as a highly prized collectible Elsie. The best thing about an Ideal Grade is that it is an affordable gun that most can double gun fans can buy without breaking the bank. We all know that the best guns to buy are the high-condition guns with most all of the factory finish on the metal. Weighing 7 1/4lbs. and balanced about 1” forward of the hinge pin, I can’t imagine a better upland, dove, turkey, waterfowl, or crow gun. Choked M/F, it will reach out and tag game or targets at 50 yards plus! Look closely at the photos and you will find an Elsie that cannot be surpassed when it comes to condition.
