The Crown Grade Elsie; one of the finest, most elegant American doubles ever produced…a “MADE TO ORDER” shotgun, with only 800 made in all gauges, and only 145 made in 20-gauge. If you consider loss and damage, there are likely less than 125 Crown Grade 20’s left on the planet. Look at the fine scroll, the floral bouquets, the multi-faceted border work, and the oval vignettes with the exquisite deep chiseled dogs on point in a field setting…simply stunning! This Crown Grade has some of the most clear and detailed engraving I have seen, clearly superior to most that were ever produced. The details on the dogs are precise and raised noticeably from the shaded background. When you pair the engraving with the delightfully sculpted frame, beaded fences, and sculpted forend iron you can see that this was a high-grade gun built for the upper echelon of gun buyers of that period. This fine Crown, serial number FWE47835 built in 1922, comes with a letter of authentication from the Cody Firearms Museum showing it was ordered and shipped with 28” barrels, Hunter One Trigger, and ejectors. The gun is configured exactly as when it left the factory and is in remarkable condition with 98% vivid factory case color and barrel blue, perfect mirror-shiny bores, 99% factory charcoal blue on the trigger guard, perfect screws, ABSOLUTELY STUNNING WOOD FIGURE, perfect checkering, still showing brilliant factory jeweling on the barrel flats and breech face…an incredible, BEST OF THE BEST L.C. SMITH CROWN GRADE! The single selective trigger works flawlessly, the ejectors are strong and well timed, and the trigger pulls are crisp. The M/F barrels are tight on the hinge pin and breech face with the top lever well right of center, and the ribs are tight. 6lbs. 3oz. and balanced dead on the hinge pin, this is the ultimate upland or vintage clays gun for those that love the art of the fine American double guns from days gone by. The gun was ordered by and shipped to Abercrombie and Fitch. It seems to have been ordered with a special feature of a gold or precious metal shield inlaid into the face of the grip cap, as the work is definitely factory correct, but the shield is missing. VFI WILL PROVIDE A SOLID GOLD SHIELD INLAID INTO THE RECESS CREATED BY THE FACTORY WITH ANY ENGRAVED INSCRIPTION THAT THE NEW OWNER REQUESTS AS PART OF THE PURCHASE PRICE, OR WE WILL PROVIDE A FACTORY CORRECT STANDARD GRIP CAP UPON REQUEST. WE DID NOT WANT TO DO ANYTHING UNTIL THAT DECISION WAS MADE BY THE NEW OWNER. Keep in mind that the Crown Grade was a gun fitted and tuned by the finest craftsman and a gun that was built to last for generations to come.
