This fine Fox was shipped during the prime early years of the company, in the second year of production for the small bore Foxes. Here we have a 1914 vintage light weight bird gun that is in remarkable condition, and is a very sound in every respect. I haven’t seen a nice AE 20ga. for sale at a reasonable price for some time and I believe they are just not available in the market place at this time. We have collectors, shooters, bird hunters, and investors all looking for the same desirable features in the Classic American Double shotguns and of the few that were made, most have been worn out or ruined by basement gun guys and Craftsman screwdrivers.
The #3 weight Krupp barrels are 26” with tight ribs that ring nicely, excellent bores at .613/.614 internal diameter (factory specs), unaltered factory choked nicely at Light Mod/Full (.015/.026), barrel wall thickness was .032 at thinnest spot (.025 is considered safe), ejectors that are extremely strong and timed perfectly, 2 ¾” chambers with lengthened forcing cones (for less recoil and better patterns), 99% remaining of slow rust re-blue, original ivory front bead, and the barrels are tight on the breach face with no wiggle.
The receiver retains 50% nice vivid case color, excellent screws, sharp clear engraving, double triggers that are crisp, 99% niter blue on trigger guard, barrels are tight on hinge with no wiggle as well as tight on face. The gun was not heavily used by the looks of things and was very well cared for.
The wood is in excellent condition with only a few light handling marks, no splits, cracks, or repairs in the butt stock anywhere, sharp checkering, wood to metal fit excellent all around, desirable modern dimensions with 14 ¼” LOP to the original factory butt plate, 2 5/8” drop at heel, 1 5/8” drop at comb, DESIRABLE PRINCE OF WHALES or “1/2 round pistol grip”, and splinter forend with clean, sharp checkering and tight fit to barrel lug.
As can be seen in the photos, this is a really nice little Fox. The 5lb. 14oz. gun balances right on the hinge pin, is wonderful to the eye, and is mechanically excellent plus. With dimensions that will fit most shooters, you have a very desirable and hard to find Fox at an affordable price. Simply from an investment standpoint this is a wise purchase. I have been trading Classic American Double shotguns for over 10 years, as most of you know, and I have yet to see a decline in prices. In fact most all who follow this market know that the prices continue to appreciate as people realize the finite number of nice guns remaining on the planet.
I can add a pad to alter LOP if you wish, and I have an excellent gunsmith that can alter chokes for $55 per barrel. Please look at my other fine shotguns on this website.
